Twist Damascus Pairing Knife
This paring knife was created for one of the most important people in my life—my mother. She has always been one of my biggest supporters and strongest encouragers throughout my knifemaking journey, and I wanted to create something truly special as a way of expressing my gratitude. Rather than making a simple kitchen knife, I decided to challenge myself by building it from custom-made twist Damascus steel.
The Damascus billet was forged from layers of 1084 and 15N20 steel with the help of fellow bladesmith Andy L., whose forge press made it possible to create the twisted pattern that would become the centerpiece of the blade. From there, the knife underwent a long process of forging, shaping, heat treating, grinding, and hand sanding. Throughout the build, I continually refined the profile and proportions, working toward a design inspired by traditional kitchen cutlery while adding my own personal touches.
To complement the blade, I incorporated a matching Damascus butt cap forged from the same twist Damascus bar. The handle was crafted from beautiful buckeye burl, chosen for its striking natural character and finished with Tru-Oil to highlight the wood's depth and figure. After extensive hand sanding and a careful acid-and-coffee etching process, the Damascus revealed the rich contrast and flowing patterns that make the material so captivating.
The finished knife became more than just a paring knife. It was a thank-you to my mother, a celebration of the support she has given me over the years, and one of my earliest opportunities to create a fully custom Damascus kitchen knife from steel I had made myself.
