Lee B. Twist Damascus Letter Opener
This twist Damascus letter opener was created for a former manager who played an important role during a major transition in my professional career. After leaving my previous company for a new opportunity, he was one of the first leaders I worked with and helped make the change feel welcoming, collaborative, and positive. As a way of expressing my gratitude, I decided to create a custom piece specifically for him.
The letter opener was forged from the same bar of twist Damascus steel used for a matching paring knife project. After rough forging the shape, I focused on creating a handle that would make the piece truly unique. Using African blackwood, I hand carved a series of flutes into the handle, carefully shaping and refining each one before adding a Tru-Stone spacer for additional contrast and visual interest.
One of the most interesting aspects of the build was the Damascus pommel. Through the heat-treating and etching process, the steel developed the deep blacks and bright contrasts that give Damascus its distinctive appearance. The oily nature of the African blackwood also allowed the handle to achieve a rich, natural gloss with nothing more than buffing.
To complete the project, I designed and built a custom presentation box. Rather than using a sheath or padded case, I felt the piece deserved a display worthy of the craftsmanship and sentiment behind it. The finished result was a one-of-a-kind letter opener and presentation box that combined traditional forging, detailed handwork, and personal meaning into a memorable gift.
