At the beginning of 2024, a friend approached me with a specific request: a hunting knife with a gut hook that would be lightweight, easy to carry, and practical for backpacking trips. Rather than simply scaling down a traditional hunting knife, I focused on designing a blade that balanced durability, functionality, and weight savings without sacrificing performance.

To keep the knife light and comfortable to carry, I incorporated a tapered tang and carefully refined the overall profile of the blade. Every unnecessary ounce was removed while maintaining the strength needed for demanding outdoor use. For the handle, I selected marbled carbon fiber paired with white G-10 liners, creating a striking contrast that complemented the clean lines of the design. The segmented handle construction added visual interest while still maintaining a rugged, purpose-built feel.

As the build progressed, I spent considerable time refining the handle contours and ergonomics to ensure the knife would feel secure and comfortable during extended use. The finished package was completed with a custom leather sheath featuring blue stitching chosen to complement the colors in the handle.

While I was pleased with how the knife turned out aesthetically, the most rewarding part came later when I received feedback from its owner. During a successful hunt, he used the knife to process an entire black bear and reported that it maintained its edge throughout the task. Hearing that the knife performed exactly as intended in a real-world hunting environment was one of the most satisfying endorsements I could receive as a maker.

This project remains a favorite because it successfully combined thoughtful design, modern materials, and proven field performance into a knife that was built for a specific purpose and delivered on that promise.
