Some knives are commissioned, some are built to challenge my skills, and others are created simply because they have the opportunity to represent something meaningful. This knife fell into that last category.

When our church introduced the "Arise and Be Men" challenge for the young men, I wanted to contribute in a way that reflected the effort and commitment the program required. Participants were invited to complete a series of physical, intellectual, social, and spiritual challenges designed to help them develop discipline, strengthen their character, and deepen their relationship with God. As an incentive—and more importantly, as a symbol of what the challenge represented—I volunteered to build a custom knife for the first young man to complete the program.

The knife itself was designed as a practical everyday carry, crafted from 80CrV2 steel and fitted with a handle of white G10 and richly figured Ironwood. Red vulcanized fiber liners and translucent red pins added subtle accents that tied the materials together while giving the knife a distinctive personality. The result was a knife built to be carried, used, and appreciated for many years.

When the challenge was completed, it was a privilege to present the knife to an outstanding young man who had demonstrated dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to grow. While I hope the knife serves him well in the years ahead, I also hope it remains a reminder that worthwhile accomplishments are earned through consistent effort, faithful living, and a commitment to becoming the person God intends us to be.

For me, this project was never just about building another knife. It was an opportunity to celebrate character, encourage the next generation, and use the skills I've been blessed to develop in support of something I believe in.
