Eva H. - Glow in The Dark Heart Tanto

This knife was created for the daughter of a family friend who had commissioned a series of custom knives for his children. After seeing the glow-in-the-dark tanto I had made for her brother, she knew exactly what she wanted: a knife with a tanto point, plenty of personality, and of course, glow-in-the-dark accents. The challenge was creating something that felt uniquely hers while still maintaining the performance and craftsmanship expected of a serious custom knife.

The blade itself came from a batch of steel I had previously prepared for future portfolio projects, giving me a solid foundation to build upon. From there, I focused on selecting materials that would create a distinctive and memorable piece. I eventually chose a one-of-a-kind set of handle scales that perfectly captured the look I was after, even though I was a little reluctant to part with them. Combined with bright pink glow-in-the-dark accents, the result struck a balance between playful and practical—what I affectionately came to think of as "beautiful and deadly."

To make the knife even more personal, I designed custom scrollwork for the blade and permanently etched it into the steel using a combination of laser engraving and acid etching. The decorative elements added an extra layer of individuality while complementing the overall theme of the knife. Careful handle shaping and contouring helped ensure the finished knife felt comfortable and well-proportioned in hand.

No custom knife feels complete without a matching sheath, so I created a custom blue leather sheath designed specifically to complement the colors and personality of the blade. The finished package combined custom artwork, unique materials, glow-in-the-dark elements, and thoughtful design details into a knife that was both functional and fun.

Of all the knives in this family project, this one stands out for its personality. It proved that a knife can be elegant, capable, and beautifully crafted while still embracing a sense of fun and individuality.
