Seth H. Sr. Damascus Bowie XL
Some projects become memorable not because of a single knife, but because of the relationships that develop along the way. This Bowie was the final knife in a series commissioned by a family over the course of nearly two and a half years. From the very beginning, they placed an incredible amount of trust in me, patiently allowing each knife to be designed and built one at a time. Their support came during the early years of Stark Custom Arms, and their belief in my work helped encourage me as I continued to grow as a craftsman.
This final knife was built for the family's father—a man I had grown to respect and consider a friend. Knowing it would complete the collection made this project especially meaningful. Throughout the build, I found myself reflecting on how much both my skills and my approach to knifemaking had evolved since I had first begun creating knives for their family. It felt only fitting that the final piece would represent that growth.
The blade was forged from my own twist Damascus with an 80CrV2 core, creating a bold pattern that complemented the classic Bowie profile. To accompany the blade, I crafted a matching twist Damascus guard featuring hand-filed clamshell accents, a detail I had never attempted before. The handle was finished with a striking piece of black curly mango, whose rich figure provided an elegant contrast to the flowing Damascus while giving the knife a distinctive character all its own.
A knife of this size and style deserved a sheath that matched the craftsmanship of the blade, so I once again partnered with T-Star Leather. Having admired his work for years, I knew his attention to detail would complement my own. Together, we collaborated over the phone to design a sheath that echoed the character of the Bowie while remaining both practical and refined. Crafted from legally harvested elephant hide and accented with a Damascus ring, the finished sheath became much more than an accessory—it became an integral part of the overall piece.
Delivering this knife was one of the most rewarding moments of the entire commission. It marked the completion of a collection built over several years and served as a reminder of the trust this family had placed in me from the very beginning. More than anything, I hope this Bowie becomes exactly what it was intended to be: a knife worthy of carrying today, displaying with pride, and eventually passing down as a family heirloom for generations to come.
