W-2 Chef’s Knife

This knife represents an important turning point in my development as a bladesmith. Through connections in my local blacksmithing community, I was introduced to Austin M., a talented maker who became both a mentor and a friend. Spending time in his shop allowed me to learn new techniques, ask countless questions, and gain insights that helped elevate my craftsmanship far beyond what I could have achieved on my own.

One of the most significant lessons from this project was learning to create a hamon on W1 tool steel. Under Austin's guidance, I explored differential heat treatment and the unique visual effects it can produce. At the same time, we heat treated several Nitro-V stainless blades, providing an opportunity to compare different steels and expand my understanding of blade performance and finishing techniques.

This knife also marked my first hidden tang construction. Wanting to push myself beyond the full-tang knives I had been making, I incorporated a carbon fiber bolster and a custom spacer made from homemade "mokume gane" created from stacked quarters. The project required new techniques and more precise fitting than many of my earlier builds, making it both challenging and rewarding.

The finished knife revealed a beautiful hamon after etching and showcased many of the lessons learned throughout the build. Although the hamon dipped lower on the edge than I would have preferred, leaving me less than fully confident in its long-term performance, the knife remains one of my personal keepsakes. More than a finished blade, it serves as a reminder of the value of mentorship, continuous learning, and the people who help us grow along the way.
