Josh H. - Tanto K-Bar

This knife was the first in a series of five blades commissioned by a family friend—one for him and one for each of his four children. The project began after he saw a paring knife I had made for my mother and shared a story about how his uncle had crafted knives for him and his siblings when they were young. Wanting to create a similar memory for his own family, he asked if I would build a custom knife for each of his children.

The first knife in the series was designed for a son who loved military history and was particularly drawn to the iconic Marine Corps K-Bar. We decided to create a knife inspired by the classic K-Bar profile while incorporating a tanto point to give it a more modern and distinctive look. Achieving the crisp transitions and clean geometry of the blade required careful grinding, aided by a precision tilt table that helped keep the lines sharp and symmetrical.

While the blade itself followed a more traditional military-inspired design, I wanted the handle to reflect the personality and interests of its young owner. The result was a set of glow-in-the-dark carbon fiber scales from Carbon Waves, creating a knife that looked impressive during the day and even more striking after dark. To complement the blade, I also designed and handcrafted a custom leather sheath featuring decorative belt accents and a D-ring suspension system for added flexibility and comfort when carried.

The finished knife successfully blended traditional craftsmanship with modern materials, creating a unique piece that honored the spirit of the classic K-Bar while giving it a personality all its own. More importantly, it marked the beginning of a project centered on family, tradition, and creating heirloom-quality gifts that could be enjoyed for years to come.
